Captain Green was unveiled in November 1990, during Singapore’s first “Clean & Green Week” campaign, which encouraged Singaporeans to adopt a clean and green lifestyle. It often came with a “Green For Life” slogan.
A frog was chosen as the mascot because they are amphibians, which are known to be sensitive to changes in the environment.
In 1997, in order to appeal to the young, Captain Green grew into a humanised frog with superpowers and was hailed as the “defender of the environment”. In recent years, Captain Green has come under the direction of the National Environment Agency, and has returned to being a regular frog as part of a book series, Adventures with Captain Green.
