Made up of a tree with the letters 'P & R', this paprika logo expresses the department's function of planting and maintaining trees across Singapore as well as the development of new parks.
The design beat 69 other entries in a competition and was awarded $300. The winner was a graphic designer from the Housing and Development Board (HDB).
The Parks and Recreation Department was established in 1976 to develop Singapore into a garden city. It originated from a Parks and Trees Branch which was overseen by the Public Works Department. In 1973, the branch became the Parks and Recreation Division.
In 1996, the department merged with the National Parks Board.
