A series of four stamps to mark a week-long sporting event opened to local and overseas participants. Festival of Sports (or Pesta Sukan) was started by the Ministry of Culture in 1964 as Singapore's first such event to build goodwill and camaraderie as well as raise standard of sports through competition amongst states of Malaysia.
After Singapore broke away from Malaysia, the festival became part of the National Day Celebrations and was moved from December to August. The type of events also expanded, with a water carnival and a national walk introduced in 1970.
